Ok gather round friends, it’s story time: Once upon a time, various ancient civilisations chewed resin from the sap of trees for various antiseptic and medicinal benefits. In fact, the earliest gum discovered dates back to the Neolithic period, around 5000 years ago.
The Mayans and the Aztecs were the first to tap into the positive properties of gum and used chicle – a natural substance extracted from the sapodilla tree, which they used to stave off hunger, freshen breath and keep teeth clean. New England settlers picked up this practice and the first synthetic chewing gum, made using paraffin wax, was created in 1850. While it still contained chicle, it evolved into a purely synthetic product by 1960 when the chewing gum you see today was developed and went mass market. This continued into the 21st century, until when we realised you could create out-of-this-world chewing gum from all-natural ingredients and get rid of all the artificial nasties. We decided to take chewing gum back to its roots and sourced the finest plant-based and plastic-free ingredients (including chicle) to create Milliways Plastic Free Gum.
