First Things First

We’re as serious as a Black Friday bargain hunter or a Harry Styles super fan; as one of Santa’s little helpers the night before Christmas or a homing pigeon on a top-secret mission.

Most big gum brands make their gum using petroleum-derived plastic ingredients. This means a few things: that you’ll find up to two straws worth of plastic in each piece, and that once chewed, conventional chewing gum will live on earth forever as single-use plastic, polluting our streets, our oceans, and taking up space in our landfills.

We went back to chewing gum’s roots, and sourced the finest chicle from the chicle sap of sapodilla trees grown abundantly throughout Mexico. We extract it from the Sapodilla tree in the same way that the Aztecs would have done it centuries ago – using the strongest and healthiest trees in the forest, small angular cuts are made down the bark of the tree to form channels. The cuts are deep enough to allow the sap to leak out, but not deep enough to harm the tree. The sap is then collected, heated and stirred together to form a sticky and consistent texture and forms the soft, chewy base of Milliways gum.

Plastic Free Gum is the impossible made real, the out-of-this-world, the super natural star of the show. It’s everything you want from chewing gum and more. Why? Because it tastes like heaven, but belongs on earth. It's made from just eight plastic-free and plant-based ingredients that are better for you and better for the planet, and comes in an array of tantalising flavours created to suit your movements and mood.

Milliways is a down-to-earth company that creates out-of-this-world snacks. We imagine the unimaginable, explore the unexplored, add colour to shadows, venture into the vast unknown of flavour, function and form, and bring it all to life in a bite-sized piece of happiness. We're reinventing the future of snacking and chewing – by throwing everything you thought you knew about artificial flavours, sweeteners and ingredients into the proverbial recycling – and bringing you treats with none of the nasties and quadruple the fun.

Where did the name come from? We get asked this A LOT.  Inspired by literary genius Douglas Adams, we were hooked on his imaginative concept of Milliways, the restaurant at the end of the Universe in his novel 'The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy'. It’s a place where anything and everything from across the Universe is on the menu. The motto is: “If you've done six impossible things this morning, why not round it off with... Milliways.” As an ode to this imaginary nirvana, Milliways brings you the impossibly delicious, plant-powered, plastic-free and planet-friendly delight that is Plastic Free Gum.

Correct – Milliways Plastic Free Gum is made from just 8 plant-based ingredients: Xylitol & Stevia, Natural Chicle Gum Base, Vegetable Glycerin, Natural Flavors, Gum Arabic, Magnesium Stearate, Carnauba Wax.

We were born in 2021, so that makes us 23 in gum years.

It’s that feeling when… you stumble upon the perfect song, or you find your friends after losing them at a festival. It feels like the first swim of summer or a Friday night; cocktails at golden hour, playing with a puppy, putting on your sunnies or a breath of fresh countryside air.

If that doesn’t answer your question, there’s only one way to find out.

You misread the recipe and added 7 garlic cloves instead of 1… and now you’ve got a date in 2 hours. It’s a tale as old as time and it’s a job for Mighty Mint – on hand to get your breath seriously freshhhhh in a split second.

That’s one secret we’ll never tell (@mum don’t worry it’s still you)

Cos it’s really really good (looking). But also because it’s better for you, and better for the planet. But you don’t need to take our word for it – have a read here.

In the UK and Europe (and partially Andromeda).

Us vs Them

Most gum is made from chewy plastic which means that once you spit it out, it lives on earth forever as single-use plastic waste, filling up our landfills or polluting our streets and oceans. We decided to change that with Milliways, so we’re 100% plant-powered, plastic-free, biodegradable and planet-friendly from our chewing gum to our packaging.

We are indeed. Milliways Plastic Free Gum biodegrades like a piece of fruit or veg.

Our packaging is entirely made from cardboard and can be fully recycled or reused.

Ok gather round friends, it’s story time: Once upon a time, various ancient civilisations chewed resin from the sap of trees for various antiseptic and medicinal benefits. In fact, the earliest gum discovered dates back to the Neolithic period, around 5000 years ago.

The Mayans and the Aztecs were the first to tap into the positive properties of gum and used chicle – a natural substance extracted from the sapodilla tree, which they used to stave off hunger, freshen breath and keep teeth clean. New England settlers picked up this practice and the first synthetic chewing gum, made using paraffin wax, was created in 1850. While it still contained chicle, it evolved into a purely synthetic product by 1960 when the chewing gum you see today was developed and went mass market. This continued into the 21st century, until when we realised you could create out-of-this-world chewing gum from all-natural ingredients and get rid of all the artificial nasties. We decided to take chewing gum back to its roots and sourced the finest plant-based and plastic-free ingredients (including chicle) to create Milliways Plastic Free Gum.

When you chew a piece of conventional plastic-based gum, its lifespan is just beginning. Once you discard it, it will go on existing as single-use plastic forever because it’s non-biodegradable!

But a piece of Plastic Free Gum will biodegrade and return to the earth, or as we like to call it, chewing gum heaven.

Despite our gum being plant-based and biodegradable, we still wouldn’t advise swallowing it given the gum’s sticky properties. (Happy now @lawyers?)

Because we use only the best plant-based, plastic-free and planet-friendly ingredients, carefully sourced from farms and suppliers around the world to deliver you the best possible product we can whilst keeping it better for you and better for our planet. These high quality ingredients aren’t aren’t as cheap or widely available as all the nasties used in conventional gum. So right now it comes at a slight premium, but we’re constantly improving to make sure Milliways will be as accessible as possible to everyone, everywhere.

We use a blend of Xylitol and Stevia to give Milliways its all-natural, sugar-free sweetness.
